Human beings is the best creature and lives together in society. In Bangladesh, many Indigenous communities reside; among them, the Patro community is a very small and underprivileged group that has been living in the country for centuries. For many reasons the Patro community are still treated as backward community. However, they have rich culture and traditions. Despite living near urban areas, the Patro community has lagged behind in progress due to various challenges, such as in education, health, awareness, land rights and other fundamental rights. To include them in the stream of development, the leaders of the Patro community took the initiative to establish a social welfare organization, which was founded in 2001 for the future development of the Patro community. This marked the beginning of a community-based organization for the Patro community people, which is now widely known as the Patro Samprodai Kallayan Porishad (PASKOP). PASKOP is a small organization that received registration from the Department of Social Services of Bangladesh in 2001. After obtaining registration, PASKOP implemented various activities over the years in different villages of the Patro areas through the Special Affairs Division of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. These activities included the construction of culverts and installation of tube wells, providing educational support and materials to students, as well as distributing cultural instruments and sports equipment. On the other hand, the organization built communication with several partner organizations to create opportunities for engaging in development activities. By working with both government and non-government development initiatives, PASKOP was gained valuable experience. Based on this experience, PASKOP realized the importance of obtaining registration from the NGO Affairs Bureau to expand its identity and activities, and it obtained NGO Affairs Bureau registration on 12 March 2012. In addition, after obtaining this registration, PASKOP got the opportunity to work with foreign donor agency MISEREOR in 2013. PASKOP is the only organization in Sylhet working tirelessly for the development of marginalized Indigenous communities, implementing programs in Sylhet Sadar, Jaintapur, and Gowainghat upazilas. Although there has been significant progress among the beneficiaries in the working areas. PASKOP believes that much work still remains to be done for the development of the target communities.
PASKOP is firmly committed to ensuring positive change and sustainable development, particularly for those deprived of rights and opportunities for these communities and envisions a society where they can achieve their human development with dignity.
